![]() As a scientist on the verge of madness, his performance rings true. With his isolation eating away at him, Neville immerses himself in his research. To that end, Smith’s portrayal is dead on. The truly terrifying portrait “I Am Legend” presents is life as the last surviving human being. Sure, these monsters let the filmmakers reach into their bag of computer-generated tricks to make the audience squirm, but ultimately, it’s a cop out. “It was obvious this group had done their homework by the questions they asked.”Ī little more dubious is a virus that gives the infected superhuman strength and a Spiderman-like ability to scale buildings. “Our scientists gave their educated opinions on whether the scenarios were plausible,” CDC’s Varian C. The Black Death is supposed to have wiped out one-third of Europe’s population in the 1300s, and more recently, the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918–19 killed at least 25 million people worldwide.ĭirector Francis Lawrence, Smith, and the film’s producers visited the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to learn about viruses, quarantines, and to vet possible scenarios with CDC’s experts. Pandemic viruses certainly rank high on the list of plausible disasters. Neville possesses a rare immunity to the virus, and as a scientist, he’s humanity’s last hope.Īlthough Reel Science is always wary of giving credence to nightmarish, humanity-destroying scenarios, the filmmakers of “I Am Legend” deserve a little credit. He’s trying desperately to find a cure for a virus that was supposed to cure cancer but instead wiped out 90% of the world’s population and turned almost everyone else into light-sensitive, hyperaggressive mutants. ![]() When he’s not hunting wild deer that roam the island, scavenging canned goods, or working out, Neville is locked away in his basement lab. Consequently, “I Am Legend” is essentially a one-man show, following the scientist as he spends his days in Manhattan with his dog, Sam, as his only companion. But in “I Am Legend,” a scientist gets to take center stage.Īs far as he knows, virologist Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the last living man on Earth. Rather, they’re usually geeky supporting characters, appearing quickly on screen to deliver a crucial plot point and then being summarily bumped off by the zombies, aliens, psychopaths, or creepy-crawlies that they’ve likely had a hand in creating. In sci-fi thrillers, scientists seldom get to be the center of attention. They took so much time in creating these creatures as they needed to trick the audience into thinking that they were real and not just an animation on the screen.REVIEWS I Am Legend BETHANY HALFORD, C&EN WASHINGTON, D.C. Implementing them into the film took 2 different types of techniques, the first being animation and the second being motion capture. For the sweat and tendons they used an animation software that allowed them to edit how the body reacted when in a certain position or movement. How they achieved this was making a main creature and creating three structures, an internal bone structure, a muscle layer and a final skin layer. They had to shows intense breathing, increased metabolism, sweat and different muscle movements. ![]() One of the biggest tasks for the movie to be made was creating the in-humane creature, that had to be made from 3D modeling software, but it wasn’t just the figure of the body that they needed. To create the large amount of cars and plant life, CGI had to be used and for what looks like it is real is mostly CGI. To get the apocalyptic look of the film, huge sets with blue and green screens had to be used as the film was set in the city of Manhattan, so they couldn’t film out on the streets of Manhattan as this didn’t show the old deteriorated look of the buildings, so advanced techniques had to be used, such as the blue and green screens, as well as advanced editing techniques FDR, 3D digital FDR, composting 3D and CG elements, location photography and different filming angles. By the poster above you can see that it is set in an apocalyptic setting and that he needs to stay armed to protect himself from the monsters created by the virus and finally you can see that next to him is his trusty dog Sam. The only company he has is Sam, his pet dog. The last hope is a man named Robert Neville looking for a cure so he can get humanity back. I am Legend is a film set in an apocalyptic time, when most humans have gone extinct from a deadly virus that turns them into some sort of primal human, that just wants to kill.
